Dolphins Sweep Bethune-Cookman; Improve to 53-0 All-Time vs. Wildcats

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (JUDolphins.com) – Continuing her reign as the top hitter in the ASUN Conference, freshman Sydney Bolding recorded a career-high 17 kills and hit .536 (17-2-28) to lead the Jacksonville University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Bethune-Cookman, Tuesday evening at Moore Gymnasium. The win lifts the Dolphins to a 53-0 mark all-time against the Wildcats.

Matched early on in the first set, the Dolphins (5-11, 1-1 ASUN) gained control through the middle of the set and held the Wildcats to a .000 hitting percentage (7-7-25), while hitting .375 themselves (12-3-24). Both senior Mallory Mattingly (5-0-7) and Bolding (4-1-7) hit above .400 at clips of .714 and .429, respectively, as Jacksonville closed out the set on an 8-0 run to rout Bethune-Cookman, 25-16.

Down two, 8-6, in the second set, the Dolphins battled through a 4-0 Wildcat run that put the hosts ahead, 12-6. Behind back-to-back aces from Mattingly, the Dolphins returned with a three-point run (12-9) before a kill from Lexi Wierzbicki opened a 9-0 rally to give Jacksonville the lead, 21-16. The Dolphins held that momentum and Wierzbicki put away the final point in a 25-21 win.

Up two games to none, the Dolphins kept their foot on the gas pedal in the third set. Jacksonville erased a 6-5 deficit and – highlighted by Mattingly's third ace to tie the set – surged to a 13-9 lead. Jacksonville continued to stay one step ahead of the Wildcats and led by as many as six, 19-13. Bethune-Cookman (4-11, 1-1 MEAC) made a late dash to force a fourth and battled to within one, 23-22. Back-to-back kills from Bolding and a third from Mattingly put the set and match squarely with the Dolphins, 25-22, to return to the Bold City with a win.

Jacksonville returns home to Historic Swisher Gymnasium this Friday, Oct. 4 when they welcome NJIT for the team's Dig Pink match at 7 p.m.
