FGCU Tops Hatters & Reaches Sixth-Straight @ASUNTennis Semifinal

DeLAND, Fla. 
- Fourth-seeded FGCU defeated Stetson, the host institution, in the opening match of the 2019 ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Championship. The Eagles swept the match 4-0 guided by singles victories from Julia Ascua, Maja Ornberg & Patricia Villar.

The Eagles opened with a victory in doubles action as the pairs of Bridget Forster Sofia Perez and Sara Kelly / Patricia Villar both registered 6-2 finishes against Stetson's second and third doubles teams. With the 1-0 lead, FGCU turned to singles action and earned victories on the first, third and fifth courts to close out the triumph.

2019 ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year Ascua garnered the first victory in singles play as she defeated Stetson's No. 3 player, Brooke Milner, 6-3, 6-1 before First Team All-Conference honoree Ornberg added a 6-2, 6-4 showing against the Hatters' Lucie Renault at No. 1. Villar closed out the match on the fifth court with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 victory against Danielle Peele.

With the win, FGCU advances to its sixth-straight ASUN Women's Tennis Championship Semifinal as the Eagles hope to reach their fourth final in the past five seasons. The Eagles improved to 10-9 on the season as FGCU advances to face top-seeded Liberty on Friday at 9 AM ET. Stetson concludes its 2019 campaign with a 12-9 record.
