SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The No. 1 North Florida Ospreys secured the 2016 Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championship title on Sunday afternoon behind a 4-2 win over No. 2 FGCU. UNF's Luise Intert clinched the match for the regular season champions, and was named Tournament MVP in the process.

The doubles point featured back-and-forth sways in momentum, as teams split results on courts one and three. Mariella Calderon and Michelle Valdez defeated Laura Falceto Font and Elizabeth means at the third slot first by a score of 6-1, before Julia Ascua and Julianna Curtis teamed to take down Noemi Hemmerich and Quetzali Vazquez 6-3 on court one. With the score knotted 5-all on court two, Luise Intert and Rafaela Gomez battled to win two straight games and claim the doubles point, 7-5.

UNF raced out to a big lead in singles, taking the first set in four of the lower six singles matches. Freshman Rafaela Gomez finished first on court three, defeating Curtis by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to put the Ospreys ahead 2-0. That lead swelled to 3-0 after Mariella Calderon proved victorious over FGCU's Landert on court six, but then FGCU began to rally. The Eagles would battle on the first two courts to pull out a pair of three-set victories, both notching a 6-0 score in the final frame. The score remained 3-2 for a lengthy time as neither team could grab consistent momentum before Intert toughed out a 7-5, 6-3 win over Means on number four. Sunday's win marks North Florida's fourth A-Sun Championship title in the past five seasons.

FGCU ends the season with a record of 12-9, advancing to the A-Sun Championship Final for the second consecutive year. North Florida receives the A-Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their next opponent on Tuesday, May 3 on
