Gerber's Distance Strike Gives Highlanders First Victory of the Season

LakePoint, Ga. - After falling in their first three contests by one-goal deficits including two overtime defeats, NJIT welcomed their first home match with open arms as the Highlanders defeated Marist, 2-0, on Wednesday in Hillside, N.J.

Arianna Gerber's long distance strike in the 29th minute pushed the Highlanders in front of the visiting Red Foxes. Gerber belted a shot from 30-plus yards sailing over the Marist keeper into the back of the net for her sixth career goal. The junior from Medford, N.J. menaced the Marist defense throughout the contest formulating five shots in total and three on frame.

Three minutes after halftime, NJIT earned an insurance goal as a Marist defender blocked an Emily Heckman shot attempt with her forearm in the penalty area. Sophomore Fiorella Doglio stepped to the penalty mark and cooly slotted the ball into the right side of the goal giving the Highlanders the 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

Earning the start one day after her 21st Birthday, goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman totaled six saves for the clean sheet. The Highlanders tangle with Saint Peter's on Saturday, Sept. 2nd at Noon ET.
