Coastal's Alexander Sets All-Time Career Goals Record in Win over UCONN

CONWAY, S.C. – Haley Alexander became Coastal Carolina's all-time career goals leader in the 15-14 win over the UCONN Huskies, Tuesday afternoon in Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.

The win improved the Chanticleers record to 4-2 while the Huskies fell to 1-7.

Alexander entered the match needing three goals to tie and four to break the previous record of 133 goals in a career held by Keri White.
Coastal opened the scoring getting the first goal at 28:42 of the match when Haley Kyger (three goals, four caused turnovers, three draw controls, and two ground balls) found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season. Jordan Harrell (one assist, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers) picked up the assist to give CCU a 1-0 lead.

Lyla Robinson pushed the lead to 2-0 with 25:08 off the clock with a feed from Samantha Courtemanche. At 22:51, Lauren Cremen scored her first goal of the year when Madeline Bromley found her in front of the goal to make it 3-0 for Coastal.
UCONN's Sydney Watson answered back twice to make it 3-2 with a free position goal with 20:52 remaining in the first half and with 25 seconds elapsing from the play clock on an unassisted goal.
Alexander (five goals and one assist) tallied her first goal when Courtemanche (four goals and two assists) found her in front of the net with 18:35 showing on the clock for the 4-2 lead. Courtemanche needed less than a minute to make it 5-2 with Cremen picking up her second career assist.
The Huskies capitalized on two penalties against CCU minutes later to tally a pair of women-up goals when Caitlin Leary (17:16) fired a shot by the defense and Watson scored her hat trick goal on a free position goal at 16:42 to make it 5-4 in favor of Coastal.
Bromley answered back for the Chanticleers to make it 6-4 on her only goal of the day with a free position goal with 15:20 on the game clock. Alexander then took a feed from Avery Drouin to push the lead to 7-4 and 10:50 remaining in the first half.

Courtemanche (7:17) and Kyger (4:56) pushed the lead to 9-4 in the opening stanza.
UCONN fired off three goals with Leary (3:39) and Olivia Miles (2:04, 1:34) to close out the scoring in the first half to make it 9-7 in favor of CCU.
The Huskies opened the second half getting two quick goals to even the match at 9-9 when Miles fed Anna Costello with 39 seconds expiring from the game clock and Leary getting the assist from Dani Dunn with 27:20 remaining in the contest.
Alexander put Coastal back in front with a free position goal for the record-tying and her third goal of the day with 24:38 left to play. She set the new school record approximately three minutes later to make it 11-9 off the assist from Robinson.
Brooke Jensen pulled UCONN back within one with 12:52 remaining to make it 11-10. Kyger (12:08) and Alexander (8:26) sandwiched a Sam McKenna (10:03) goal to make it 13-11 for the home team.

The Huskies Olivia Troy (5:21) and Watson (4:12, 3:34) scored back-to-back goals as UCONN took a 14-13 lead briefly late in the match.
Courtemanche answered back with the final two goals on the day for the final tally of 15-14 with Bromley getting both assists with 2:37 and 59 seconds remaining in the match.
Sarah McEvoy picked up the final draw to allow the Chanticleers to run out the final seconds.
Defensively, Harley Barrett made 13 saves, with nine coming in the second half, and scooped up five ground balls and caused one turnover. Hannah Krin played in the midfield and on the defensive end guarded Olivia Miles throughout the match. Overall the Chants forced 13 turnovers and held a 24-14 advantage in ground balls.

The Chanticleers return to action on Sunday, March 24 as they host the College of William and Mary, with the opening draw scheduled for noon.
