BRASELTON, Ga. - Kennesaw State opened up a 19-stroke advantage on the field following the second round of the 2019 ASUN Conference Women's Golf Championship. Leading the charge for the Owls was Second Team All-Conference member, Medy Thavong as she fired a four-under par 69 to take control of the individual leaderboard by five strokes.
Thavong's round included four birdies and an eagle from just off the fairway on No. 9. The senior from Thailand reached six-under par after a birdie on the 11th hole before bogies on 13 & 15 moved her back to four-under. Her round of 69 is tied for the fourth-best second round score in championship history.
As a team, KSU finished the round with a 290 (-2) for an improvement of 19 strokes from yesterday. The Owls finished two strokes away from tying the low 18-hole score against par, which was set by KSU in 2012's second round. Charlotte Charrayre contributed an even par 73 for KSU, while the remaining three of Clara Aveling, Roanne Tomlinson & Chloe Thornton all carded one-over par 74.
FGCU moved into second place as Natalia Nassar registered a two-under par 71, which improved on her first-round score by 10 strokes. Her performance moved her up the leaderboard into fourth place. Laura Edmonds added a two-over 75 as she sits tied for fifth place. Kelsy Hobert equaled her opening score of 77 to tie for seventh place. The Eagles sit nine strokes clear of North Florida after a 301 (+9) today as FGCU shot 16 strokes better than Sunday.
Two North Florida student-athletes sit in the top-10 after the second round with Liss Davalos (T5th; +7) and Mindy Herrick (10th; +10). Davalos marked down the best score of the day for UNF with a three-over 76 while Herrick added a 77. As a team, North Florida registered a team total of 313.
Stetson's Justine Lauer and Sarah May both sit inside the top-12 of the leaderboard in ties for 7th & 11th, respectively. May finished the day at two-over par for the best score for the Hatters on Monday. Jacksonville shaved off 26 strokes from their opening round to move into fifth place after rounds of 78 from Maria Brunzell & Hannah Berman.
Lipscomb and North Florida round out the team leaderboard in sixth and seventh and are led by Rachael McMahan (T11th; +12) and Taryn Simmons (28th; +29). The Lions improved on their first round by 23 strokes to set a new standard for UNA.
The ASUN Women's Golf Championship concludes on Tuesday with the final round starting at 10:30 AM ET off the first tee at The Legends Course. The final pairing of Medy Thavong, Natalia Nassar and Liss Davalos begin their rounds at 12:40 PM ET.
