JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - No. 2 Jacksonville Dolphins advanced to the 2016 Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Semifinals with an 80-51 victory against Lipscomb on Friday night in Swisher Gymnasium. The win marked the 20th of the season for JU; the first 20-win season for the Dolphins since the 2007-08 season.
Kimberly Dawkins set new career-highs in the contest for points and blocks with 11 & 5, while adding seven rebounds. Jacksonville dominated the rebounding tally with 46 compared to Lipscomb's 31. Both sides secured 16 offensive rebounds as the Bisons' Ashley Southern nearly collected her ninth double-double of the season on a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds.
In the opening quarter, Jacksonville held a four-point advantage, 17-13, before extending their lead to 37-28 at the break. Brandi Buie led all scorers with 11 points heading into the locker room as she finished with a career-best 20 for the contest adding another career-high in boards (9). Southern tallied 10 points at half for Lipscomb on 5-of-9 shooting.
After the break, Jacksonville increased the intensity on the defensive end forcing Lipscomb into 13 turnovers, while holding the Bisons to 5-of-28 shooting. For the game, JU stifled Lipscomb's shooting percentage on field goals at 27.4 (17-62). The Bisons made up for it at the line missing only one attempt in 14 tries. The Dolphins connected on 30-of-57 field goals for the game including 6-of-13 from deep in the win.
First Team All-Conference Selection, Sherranda Reddick added 15 points for JU as Kayla Gordon neared a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Jacksonville now faces No. 3 USC Upstate on Wednesday, Mar. 9th in Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins swept the season series against the Spartans.
Jacksonville - Lipscomb Quarterfinal Notes
- Seven Dolphins tallied at least seven points in the contest as only eight student-athletes took the court for JU.
- In the loss, Lipscomb forced Jacksonville into 23 turnovers; most for the Dolphins since Feb. 4th vs. FGCU.
- Brandi Buie became the fourth Jacksonville player to record a 20-point game this season. She joins Sherranda Reddick, Christin Mercer and Briona Brown.
- Southern finished her career with 1,282 career points, which ranks 48th in A-Sun history.
