AUSTIN, Texas (liberty.edu/flames) -- Liberty Flames midfielder Ruben Garcia has been named to the 2019 Academic All-America® Division I men's soccer team selected by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association. The 34 members of the 2019 NCAA Division I team were announced earlier today.
Garcia, who earned second team honors, becomes the third Liberty men's soccer player to be selected to the prestigious squad. The midfielder, who completed his senior season earlier this fall, joins Phillip Aseweh (2011) and two-time selection Michael Gelatt (2007-08) as Liberty CoSIDA Academic All-America team members.
Of the 34 members on the 2019 Academic All-America® Division I men's soccer's three teams, 11, including Garcia, boast a perfect 4.0 GPA. The entire men's team holds a collective average GPA of 3.92.
Garcia was selected as the 2019 ASUN Conference's Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The interdisciplinary studies major also earned inclusion on the ASUN All-Academic team for the second straight season, this past fall.
The Madrid, Spain native was one of three Flames to start every game this season, logging over 1,400 minutes. He finished his Liberty career starting his last 41 games in a Flames uniform.
Last year, Garcia was one of six Liberty student-athletes to be named to the 2018-19 VaSID All-State Academic team and earned inclusion on the ASUN Honor Roll.
