MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference awarded the 2014-15 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to USC Upstate's senior guard Mario Blessing, announced Tuesday by the conference office. Blessing is joined by four other men's basketball student-athletes on the Academic All-Conference Team.
Blessing, a three-time Academic All-Conference selections, boasts a 3.798 cumulative GPA as an Economics Major and is the only USC Upstate player to start all 31 games this season. He ranks third in the A-Sun with a 2.5 assist to turnover ratio as he helped the Spartans to the No. 3 seed in the A-Sun Championship.
The Kusterdingen, Germany native has committed just 34 turnovers in 827 minutes of action this season, while also averaging 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Blessing becomes the first student-athlete to land three A-Sun Academic All-Conference honors and the first from Upstate to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade.
The Academic All-Conference Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the A-Sun's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
