ATLANTA, Ga. - With plenty of scenarios at play on Friday for potential ASUN Conference Baseball Championship seeding and berths, none of them came to fruition as the penultimate day of the regular season came to a close, setting up thrilling finishes to the season tomorrow afternoon. Liberty kept their chances alive for a regular season title while Kennesaw State staved off elimination with a big win. Lipscomb and North Florida grabbed big wins as well.
ASUN Baseball Results - Friday, May 17th
Kennesaw State 10, Jacksonville 0
Liberty 4, FGCU 2
Lipscomb 4, North Alabama 0
North Florida 7, Stetson 6
Liberty maintained a shot at the Regular Season title with a 4-2 win vs. FGCU, plating all four runs in the first two innings to set the stage for the evening. The Flames received run-scoring hits from Ben Highfill, Cam Locklear and Gray Betts to stun the Eagles and push the series to a crucial rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM ET. The winner of tomorrow's contest would raise the Regular Season title trophy while also claiming the top seed in the upcoming ASUN Championship. The loser of the final game would go into the postseason as the two seed in the festivities.
North Florida kept Stetson from clinching a berth in the postseason with a nail-biting 7-6 victory on the road. Leading 7-3 in the seventh, UNF saw Stetson pour on three runs to make things tight entering the final pair of innings. Trace Norkus was able to keep the tying run on the bases in the bottom of the eighth before giving way to closer Eddie Miller who recorded the final two outs of the game to preserve the win. The series finale takes place tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM ET. With a win, Stetson clinches a spot in the ASUN Championship for the 20th-straight season. The Ospreys can move up the seeding chart, but can finish no worse than fifth regardless of results.
Kennesaw State staved off elimination from the ASUN Championship field with a 10-0 drubbing of Jacksonville behind a pair of two-run homers from Justin Russell. Now leading the ASUN with a dozen long balls on the year, Russell led the Owls to a season-saving victory as a loss would have secured Stetson's spot in the postseason. Ryan Kennedy was brilliant on the mound, going six innings while striking out six and limiting JU to three hits. With Stetson's loss later in the day, KSU can make the postseason with a win in the season finale paired with a loss by the Hatters tomorrow afternoon. If the Owls get in, they will be the sixth seed in the tournament.
Lipscomb secured a series win and big victory for potential seeding, shutting out North Alabama 4-0. The Bisons received yet another complete game shutout from one of their starters, this time Noah Thompson who blanked the Lions over nine innings of work, striking out eight and allowing just four hits. Cade Sorrells was the big bat on the night, providing two of the runs driven in for the Bisons. Depending on results tomorrow, Lipscomb can move as high as the three-seed in the championship or move down to the five with a loss and North Florida victory.
