Bisons Battle Back In The Ninth To Walk Off Austin Peay

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team picked up the win in its midweek matchup against Austin Peay in come from behind fashion on Tuesday afternoon at Dugan Field.

The Governors (15-12, 8-4 OVC) started the first inning off with a bang. David Martinez stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run home run to give Austin Peay the early 2-0 lead.

The Bisons (14-13, 3-3 ASUN) came right back to tie the game up in the bottom of the first, however. Chris Bashlor and David Graves both smacked RBI singles platting Haddon Adams and Cade Sorrells.

After a scoreless second inning, Lipscomb was able to jump out in front via the long ball. Josh Martinez led off the inning with a single and one batter later Sorrells smacked his third home run of the season over the wall in right field. Maddux Houghton then came up after a line out from Bashlor and crushed his first home run of the year to left field giving the Bisons a 5-2 lead.

Austin Peay would fight its way back in the game and eventually take the lead after scoring two runs in the fourth, two runs in sixth and one run in the seventh to make it 7-5 Governors.

The Purple and Gold stayed tough and were able to cut it down to a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth to stay in contention. Houghton led off with a single and showed off his speed, as the sophomore was able to make it all the way home on a double from David Graves into the left field corner.

The Governors responded plating a run in the top of the ninth to get it back to a two-run ball game heading into the final frame.

The Bisons, however, saved their best for last. Adams led off with a walk and Josh Martinez followed with a single putting them on second and third base after advancing on the throw. Sorrells would come through in the clutch roping a single to right center to tie the game at eight runs apiece.

Bashlor and Houghton would keep the hits coming with back-to-back singles, which loaded the bases for David Graves. Graves would drive in the winning run on a hard hit ball to the APSU third baseman, which allowed the Bisons to come away with the walk-off victory.

"There are a lot of lessons we can learn from this game," head coach Jeff Forehand said. "There are some mental things that we have to be more engaged with, but to score three runs in the ninth is really hard to do against a good team."

  • This was the second walk-off win for the Bisons this season.
  • Lipscomb was now won four games in a row.
  • Six different Bisons recorded multiple hits (Martinez, Sorrells, Bashlor, Hougton, Graves and Jarrett O'Leary).
  • Sorrells drove in a season-high four runs on the day.
  • Tyler Sills picked up his second win of the season.

The Bisons will return to conference play with a weekend series at FGCU. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CST).
