Bisons Bounce Back with Big Win Over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Lipscomb baseball team bounced back and picked up a 9-3 win over Ohio State in the second game of the weekend series.

The Bisons (10-7) and Buckeyes (8-10) were locked in a pitchers duel with Noah Thompson and Griffan Smith on the mound for the two ball clubs. Neither team recorded a hit until the fourth inning when Ohio State's Brady Cherry doubled to left center. Cherry would come around to score on a sacrifice fly to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.

Lipscomb would come back in the top of the fifth and score three runs, all with two outs, thanks to a two-RBI double off the top of the wall in left center by Tevin Symonette plating Haddon Adams and Jarrett O'Leary. Senior Zeke Dodson would follow Symonette with a double of his own to put the Bisons on top 3-1.

After the Buckeyes cut the Bisons lead to 3-2 with another sacrifice fly, Lipscomb would answer with two runs in the sixth. Cade Sorrells came around to score on a wild pitch and Ty Jones scored on a bloop-single to center off the bat of O'Leary.

Ohio State made its biggest threat of a comeback in the seventh. Following a double by Noah West, Dominic Canzone hit a triple to straight away center field getting the Buckeyes back within two runs. With Canzone on third, Max Habegger got the Bisons out of the inning with a big strike out of Ohio State's best hitter, Cherry, on a breaking ball on the outside corner.

The Bisons put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with a grand slam from Sorrells over the right field wall to secure the victory.

  • Sorrells' grand slam was the first of the season and his second home run on the year.
  • The Bisons showed patience at the plate, reaching base via walk 12 times.
  • Lipscomb swiped five bags in the game compared to one by Ohio State.
  • Habegger went 3.0 innings and struck out six batters in a relief appearance.

The Bisons and Buckeyes will play in rubber match to end the weekend. First pitch is scheduled for noon (CST).
