NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Dakota Higdon tripled to right center delivering a walkoff 1-0 victory for No. 2 North Florida and a fitting end to an instant classic at the 2016 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship. It marked the third-straight one-run game between the Ospreys & No. 4 Lipscomb.
Freshman Austin Drury started on the mound for North Florida and held Lipscomb to only two hits over eight innings as he fanned eight batters. He exited in the ninth as Corbin Olmstead, Daniel Moritz & Matthew Naylor combined to shut out the Bisons as Naylor collected his fifth victory with 1.1 innings of work.
Opposite of Drury, Lipscomb's Jeffrey Passantino finished one out away from equaling the ASUN Championship record for innings pitched of 10 set in 1980 by two separate pitchers. A sophomore, Passantino allowed six hits, struck out six batters with only one walk as he suffered the loss despite a masterful performance.
The contest was a rematch of last year's ASUN Championship Final which finished as an 8-7 decision. The Bisons & Ospreys played earlier in last year's tournament with the Bisons winning 2-1. North Florida heads right back to Ken Dugan Field to face No. 6 Stetson at 12:30 PM CT as the Hatters also enter with a 2-0 record in the championship. The Ospreys have now won eight-straight contests, which is the longest win streak by an ASUN team in 2016.
Lipscomb faces No. 5 FGCU at 4 PM CT in an elimination contest as the Bisons five-game winning streak was snapped by the Ospreys.
