NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Kenton Hering delivered a career-best performance on the mound in FGCU's 6-0 victory against top-seeded Kennesaw State to eliminate the No. 1 seed from the 2016 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship. FGCU is the first team to hold the top seed scoreless since 2000 and fourth all-time.

The Eagle offense plated a singular run for Hering in the second inning on Gage Morey's single as Colton Bottomley crossed home. From there, Hering worked a career-high 6.1 innings allowing only two hits, while striking out five batters on three walks. Stefano Belmonte delivered run security with a two-run homer for his first dinger of the season.

A trio of RBI singles in the seventh and eighth frames extended FGCU's advantage to 6-0 as the Eagles delivered KSU's second-straight loss. The Owls are the first top seed to lose their first two games at the ASUN Championship since 2000.

Sterling Koerner entered in relief for Hering in the seventh and held the Owls hitless for 2.2 innings as only one batter reached base. The junior from Fort Pierce, Fla. collected the save for his efforts marking his fourth of the season. The combined two-hit shutout was the fewest hits allowed since the Eagles defeated Jacksonville, 3-0, in the 2014 ASUN Championship behind Jack English's two-hit performance.

FGCU advances to the 4 p.m. CT Friday contest where the Eagles await to find out their opponent. The Eagles could face either No. 3 Jacksonville or the loser of Lipscomb vs. North Florida. Kennesaw State's season ends with a 29-27 record as the Owls finished 17-4 in league play to earn their first-ever ASUN Regular Season title.
