DELAND, Fla. - No. 3 FGCU defeated No. 2 North Florida by a 3-2 score to advance to the title match of the 2019 ASUN Conference Beach Volleyball Championship Friday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts in DeLand, Fla. The Eagles head to the title match for just the third time in program history and first since 2017.
North Florida's No. 4 pair of Dana Roskic and Callie Workman earned a straight-set victory over Emma Hansen and Giovanna Borgiotti, 23-21, 21-17. The Eagles tied up the match as their No. 5 pair of Cortney VanLiew and Alayna Ryan came from behind to earn a three-set (19-21, 21-16, 15-13) win over Kirby Smith and Lauren Galinis.
The Ospreys took a 2-1 lead when their No. 1 pair of Brittany Pase and Chaney Howard defeated Amanda Carroll and Kirstine Garder, 21-14, 21-11. The FGCU No. 2 pair of Katherine Puisis and Karissa Rhoades tied the match at 2-2 when they defeated Antonia Harrison and Carolyn Cain, 21-12 and 21-19.
It all came down to the No. 3 pair match between UNF's Madilyn McCarty / Nicole DeBolt vs. FGCU's Snowy Burnman / Kayle Whetstone. After taking set one (21-15), Burnam and Whetstone dropped set two (18-21) forcing a decisive third set. The Eagle tandem came out on top defeating McCarty and DeBolt, 15-11 to win the match for FGCU.
FGCU (17-10) will face top seed Stetson in the 2019 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship title match. First serve is scheduled for 1:40 PM ET. North Florida concludes its season with a 20-14 record.
