DELAND, Fla. - In the only match of the day to go down to the wire, No. 2 North Florida outlasted No. 3 FGCU, 3-2 Thursday afternoon at the 2019 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship. Four of the five pairs went three sets.
The contest got started in competitive fashion as the No. 4 and No. 5 pairs both resulted in come-from-behind victories in three sets. FGCU's duo of Emma Hansen and Giovanna Borgiotti took the No. 4 slot with a 17-21, 21-13, 15-13 win over Dan Rosic and Callie Workman. The Ospreys claimed the No. 5 position as Kirby Smith and Lauren Galinis were victorious over Cortney VanLiew and Alayna Ryan, 18-21, 21-16, 15-11.
The UNF No. 2 pair of Antonia Harrison and Carolyn Cain put the Ospreys up 2-1 with a 23-21, 21-19 straight-set win over the FGCU tandem of Katherine Puisis and Karissa Rhoades. FGCU tied up the match 2-2 when Snowy Burnam and Kayla Whetston defeated Madilyn McCarty and Nicole DeBolt 21-19, 21-17, 17-15 at No. 3. The clincher came one serve later as UNF's Brittany Pase and Chaney Howard defeated Amanda Carroll and Kirstine Garder (FGCU) 21-19, 21-17, 16-14.
The Ospreys move on to face top-seeded Stetson Friday at 11:30 AM ET. Meanwhile, the Eagles battle Austin Peay in an elimination match Friday at 7:30 AM ET.
