FGCU Defeats North Alabama to Advance in #ASUNBVB Championship

DELAND, Fla. - No. 3 FGCU moved on in the 2019 ASUN Conference Beach Volleyball Championship Thursday with a 5-0 victory over No. 6 North Alabama.

The match got started with straight-set wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions by FGCU. At No. 4, the Eagles' Emma Hansen / Giovanna Borgiotti defeated the Lions' tandem of Ashtyn Kapovich / Josie Maldonado 21-11, 21-12. FGCU's Cortney VanLiew / Alayna Ryan then ousted UNA's Ana Gabriela Pacheco / Genesis Benitez 21-8, 21-18 at No. 5.

The Eagles clinched the match when the No. 2 pair of Katherine Puisis and Karissa Rhoades defeated the Lions duo of Catie Ladner and Sina Faulk, 21-12, 21-3.

In the final two pairs, FGCU's Snowy Burnam / Kayla Whetston took out UNA's Ava Carnley / Libby Jump by two 21-18 sets at the No. 3 position. The No. 1 pair was the final position to finish as Amanda Carroll and Kirstine Garder (FGCU) defeated Sophia Brandstetter and Paula Klemperer (UNA) by scores of 21-19 and 21-16. 

The Eagles advance to the winners bracket, where they will battle No. 2 North Florida this afternoon at 3 PM. The Lions will face the loser of this afternoon's No. 1 Stetson vs. No. 4 Coastal Carolina match tomorrow at 11 AM.
