John Roberts joined as the ASUN Conference as its Director of Sports Services in August of 2007, was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in 2012, to Associate Commissioner in 2015, and once more to Senior Associate Commissioner in 2018.
A member of the Commissioner’s Leadership Team, Roberts participates in the development and implementation of short and long range goals and initiatives that align with the conference’s vision, mission, and strategic plan.
Serving as the primary sport administrator for Men’s Basketball and Baseball, Roberts also manages macro championship organization and execution for the conference, as well as preparation and distribution of regular season schedules for all ASUN sports.
As the ASUN expands partnerships with peer conferences, Roberts serves as the primary liaison with counterparts at the American, OVC, SEC, and Sun Belt in the development of broad-based officiating programs aimed at improving the continued education and training of officials, as well as the breadth and depth of talent of officiating pools across all sports.
Beginning in 2012, Roberts helped oversee a four-year plan that saw the ASUN install state-of-the-art production equipment on each member campus, allowing the league to originate ESPN broadcasts using only campus infrastructure and personnel. The ASUN’s industry leadership in campus productions steadily grows year-over-year with the conference broadcasting every home men’s women’s basketball game on ESPN3 for the first time during the 2015-16 season. The growth continued beyond 2016 with league members transmitting more than 900 broadcasts over the next two seasons.
Roberts provides support to the league’s governance structure as well, serving as ASUN Staff Liaison to the Marketing and Athletic Administrators committees.
No stranger to the ASUN, Roberts spent two seasons as the Assistant Director for Media Relations at former conference member East Tennessee State University from 2005-2007. During his tenure with the Buccaneers, Roberts served as the primary contact for Baseball, Cross Country/Track & Field and Volleyball, as well as providing support for Men's and Women's Basketball. He served as the sports information contact when ETSU hosted the 2006 ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships, and headed up all statistical efforts at the 2006 and 2007 Men's Basketball Championships.
Prior to his time at ETSU, Roberts spent one year as Sports Media Relations Intern at James Madison University. While at JMU, he served as the primary contact for eight winter and spring sports, and worked closely with the Football team during the Dukes' 2004 Division I-AA national championship season.
Hailing from Valdosta, Ga., Roberts attended the University of Georgia, graduating in the summer of 2004 with a Bachelor's Degree in Religion. While at Georgia, he worked as a student assistant in the sports communications department. In May of 2013, Roberts earned a Master of Public Administration from Georgia College and State University.
Roberts resides in Macon with three-year old daughter Lillian and rescue dog Flynn.
