Richmond Wins #ASunMLax Championship

MACON, Ga. - Richmond defeated High Point to win the 2014 Atlantic Sun Men's Lacrosse Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. In an exciting game, the Spiders won 8-7 to capture the title.

Richmond's Mitch Goldberg scored the game-winner with 3:13 remaining to give the Spiders their berth to the NCAA Tournament. Benny Pugh made 14 saves, while Goldberg led the offense with two goals and an assist.

In the opening quarter teams traded goals in an evenly matched contest. Richmond took a 3-2 lead courtesy of goals by Chetner, Goldberg and Ginestro. The Panthers answered with goals by Dan Lomas and Tyler Cook.

The second quarter was dominated by both defenses as only one goal was scored. Alex Hatem scored with 5:58 remaining to give the Spiders their first two-goal lead of the half. Richmond outshot their opponents 20-13 in the opening half.

The Panthers offense started to come to life in the third quarter, led by Lomas who completed his hat trick with two goals in the period. But Richmond answered to maintain a two-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter. Jackson Cabot and Brad Burnam scored to give the Spiders six different goal scorers at this point.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth affair as the Panthers made a run to start the quarter. Led by Dan Lomas, who finished with four goals, the Panthers tied the game at 6-6. Mitch Goldberg, selected as the Tournament MVP, took over for the Spiders to lead them to victory. He assisted with a behind-the-back pass and then scored the game-winner to secure the team's NCAA Tournament berth.

Offensive Player of the Year Dan Lomas led all scorers with five points. Teammate Austin Geisler recorded 12 saves, but the turnovers were costly as the Panthers committed 20 in the game. High Point also only converted 15 of their 21 clear attempts, which allowed Richmond to control the time of possession.

After having a big disparity in shots in their semifinal game, Richmond only had a 35-34 shot advantage in this game. The Spiders didn't convert any of their three man-up opportunities, but still were able to hold for the win late.

The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Selection Show will be Sunday at 9 p.m. live on ESPNU.
